EARLY PIANOWORKS OF SERGEY RACHMANINOV
1873 - 1943
This unique CD gives a survey of Rachmaninov's development as a composer. He composed the first works performed on this CD when he was only fifteen years old. The influence of Chaikovski and Chopin is still very noticeable. The pieces are still rather transparent, but yet composed with a great deal of tone colour: the later Rachmaninov can already be recognized. The recording takes you gradually forward to the first real mature pieces.
He composed The Six Moments Musicaux (1896), when he was 23 years of age.

The reviews
“... David Mannesse takes this music seriously, in a sympathetic manner. His performance is well thought-out and sensitive, without over-emphasising the sometimes rather prominent sentimentality. I listened to this plea with pleasure…”

PIANOWORKS OF HERMAN STRATEGIER
1912 - 1988
This piano music has a distinctly Dutch character, but has also been influenced by French composers, including Ravel, Fauré and the choir composer Duruflé.
Many of the pieces on this CD have a light and playful character, alongside slower pieces with the more elegiac character distinctive of Strategier. Mannesse is the Strategier authority and specialist in his music.
(for more information see Repertoire).

After its release in 1994, this CD received extensive attention in the Dutch media and was given positive reviews. It is played regularly on the Dutch Radio 4 and the Concert broadcasting channel 'de Concertzender'.
